Post NSLI-Y/College Life Pt. 2: Opportunities as a NSLI-Y Alumna

Image
In continuation with my last blog post, here is the second "Post NSLI-Y/College Life" blog post. This one is geared more towards alumni, but anyone can read it to learn of some of the opportunities you get as NSLI-Y alumni and know how to keep up with language studies even after you come home from being abroad! This blog post ended up being much longer than I expected, so I have split it into two different posts:  Part 1: Keeping Up With Korean  Part 2: Opportunities as a NSLI-Y Alumna They're quite long, but I encourage you to read both of them. They're filled with personal but relevant post-NSLI-Y experiences that will hopefully be beneficial to you. ALSO, I saw that NSLI-Y started sending out notifications last week, so HUGE congratulations to those who will be going abroad with NSLI-Y this year. And to those who don't get it, congratulations to you  too , really. Congratulations to you for even being a semifinalist and for applying to NSLI-Y in the firs...

Restaurants in Seoul Pt.1: 신촌♥ (Sinchon)

Image
I know you are all excited to eat authentic Korean food in Korea, so this post will be all about restaurants I ate at during my time in Korea and loved! It can be kind of overwhelming seeing all the options of restaurants to eat at in Korea, so hopefully this post will help you! Okay, so I wrote this when I thought you'd be going to Sogang University in Sinchon this summer (like the previous years did), but you'll be going to a different school in a different area. You may or may not find yourself in Sinchon, but some of these places can be found all over Seoul anyway! Either way, I hope this post is helpful to y'all ^^  ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 토마토김밥 (Tomato Kimbap) This is a restaurant many of us NSLI-Y summer kids found ourselves eating in at least a few times in the summer. It was right on the way to Sogang University (where we had classes) from the subway station, so it was convenient... and che...

My Average Day in Seoul as a NSLI-Y Student

Image
I'm sure many people are curious about what is it like to be on the NSLI-Y Korea Summer Program, so I thought that I'd talk about my average day in Seoul [while on the program]! Not all 50 of us did the same things each and every day, and even the things I did each day varied, but I am speaking generally from my own experience. I hope this will answer some questions about what daily life is like on the program and what you can do on the program~ *I did the program in 2014, and it seems like a lot is changing this year, so this might not be that much help for you guys. This is what it was like on my program and what it was like for me. You probably will have a pretty different schedule and experience, so please don't expect your day to be just like ours/mine last year!  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AVERAGE WEEKDAY 7 a.m: Wake up and eat breakfast with family 8-9 a.m: Get ready and leave ...

Cooking Class

Image
So during the program, there are a few cultural activities we did that were set up by the program. One of them was a Korean cooking class, which I was looking forward to because I love Korean food and already cook it back home! I was excited to learn how to make more foods! Our cooking class was at  서울관광고등학교, and it was quite the subway ride to get there from where I lived. I left super early in the morning.. like before my host family woke up. I think that was the only day I didn't eat breakfast with them&left before they woke up, so I just left a note to let them know where I went. Despite leaving so early I was almost late cause the station was SOOO crowded.. I remember seeing a girl in the subway station then running together to find everyone because we were scared we were late. Anyway, we all met at the subway station and then walked to the high school we were having our cooking class at. There were a LOT of hills, which is why we were told to wear sneakers haha.  ...
