NSLI-Y is a program that provides scholarships for high school students to study abroad in countries where less commonly taught languages are spoken [in order to learn that language], funded by the U.S. Department of State.

- Arabic >> Jordan, Morocco, Oman
- Chinese >> China, Taiwan
- Hindi >> India
- Korean >> South Korea
- Persian (Tajiki) >> Tajikistan
- Russian >> Russia
- Turkish >> Turkey
You don't have to have any prior knowledge of the language you wish to study- this is open to students of all levels!
ELIGIBILITY
- You must be a U.S. citizen
- GPA of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- 15-18 years of age at start of program
- Enrolled high school student (including home school)
Note that these are just some of the elegibility requirements, not all of them.
APPLYING:
The application usually comes out in mid-September and is due in early November. The application is online and consists of basic information about you, a teacher recommendation, parent statement/recommendation, and essays. There are two essays that are based off of the given prompts/topics, an introduction letter to your host family, and an explanation of your program choices.
SEMIFINALS
In December, you will be notified if you have been selected as a semifinalist or not.
EVERYONE WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL, semifinalist or not.

Semifinalists will then have an interview [phone/skype, in-home, in person], and interviews will go from December to February.
Semifinalists will also be required to submit a medical evaluation form and get a TB test if they haven't already had one in the past 6 months [I think?]
*Semifinalists should have a passport or a apply for one if you do not have one already*
Finalist notifications will go out in March-April, and just like during the semifinalist round...
EVERYONE WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL NOTIFYING THEM OF THEIR STATUS, FINALIST OR NOT.
Finalists have 7 days [one week] to accept the scholarship and do what is necessary to officially take it.

Summer programs will be notified first when it comes to finalist notifications followed by year programs.
NSLI-Y IS UNPREDICTABLE- YOU NEVER KNOW HOW THEY WORK, SO DON'T BOTHER ASKING. THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DISCUSS THOSE THINGS.
